This weekend marks the annual Newport Seafood and Wine Festival on the Oregon coast.
As a law enforcement agency, we are committed to protecting every driver, passenger, bicyclist and pedestrian on the road. We want the community to enjoy the festival; however, we are asking people to drive sober and avoid getting behind the wheel if they have been drinking alcohol or consuming other intoxicating substances.
Highway 20 is the deadliest roadway in Benton County, with seven fatalities from crashes recorded last year alone. Data from Oregon Department of Transportation shows 85% of those fatalities involved drugs and/or alcohol.
In a concerted effort to prevent these tragedies, nine law enforcement agencies, including the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Corvallis Police Department and Philomath Police Department, have partnered together to improve road safety and reduce traffic crashes resulting from impaired drivers and other hazardous driving behavior this weekend. Other agencies include Albany Police Department, Lincoln City Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Newport Police Department, Oregon State Police, and Toledo Police Department.
We will be increasing traffic patrol on Highway 20 this weekend.
Drive sober. Don’t be “shellfish.”

On January 15, 2025, a Benton County Circuit Court Judge sentenced 62-year-old Daniel Scott Roloff, of Monroe, to a 12-month incarceration for Recklessly Endangering Another Person x2, and Menacing x3.
This conviction stems from Roloff’s arrest on Aug. 18, 2021.
At about 5:30 p.m. on August 17, 2021, Benton County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) Deputies responded to the area of the 26000 block of Foster Rd. for a report of a male actively shooting a firearm in the direction of construction workers at a private residence in the area. Deputies established a perimeter of the area, evacuated the construction crew, attempted to make contact with the suspect, and were met with gunfire from the property. During that time, a total of 9 shots were fired in 9 minutes from the property. At approximately 11:00 p.m., the decision was made to stand down the SWAT team and hand the scene back over to BCSO deputies who remained in the neighborhood throughout the night.
On the morning of August 18, 2021, BCSO detectives returned to the location and served a search warrant on the residence. The lone resident, Daniel Scott Roloff, was taken into custody without incident by BCSO and transported to the Benton County Jail.
